New Year’s Resolutions to Make 2019 Your Year

New year, new you, right?

A new year is a perfect time for new beginnings. You get to leave the past behind you and start afresh. Even though you can have your new beginning whenever, there is just something symbolic about New Year that makes new beginnings seem more significant, more authentic.

Now’s the time to take a look at your life: Am I happy? Do I want more?

If there is anything you would like to improve in your life, this is it. Find your New Year’s resolution to help you on your way to a happier you. Own your best life.

To get you started on your quest to find your perfect New Year’s resolution, I have compiled a list of ideas for New Year’s resolutions.

Make friends

Meeting new people can be good for your mental wellbeing, so don’t be afraid to get out there and make some friends. Overcome your shyness and go and get to know new and interesting people.

If you’re wondering how to make new friends, a few things you can do are to invite casual acquaintances from the gym or work out for a coffee; join a social club like a book club or a running group; or

Get organised

I’m not saying you have to spring clean your entire house in one day – you can start small. Take a Saturday morning to organise your closet, ordering your clothes in a way that will help you keep your closet tidy. Get folders and organisers to keep your desk neat. Go through your contact list and delete contacts you no longer need.

Learn a new skill or hobby

Give meaning to your year by learning one or more new skill. What have you always wanted to learn to do? The possibilities are endless.

Here is a list of ideas of skills you can learn:

  • Painting
  • Cooking
  • Gardening
  • First Aid
  • Drawing
  • Chess
  • Blogging
  • Playing an instrument
  • Knitting


Experiencing new things make the passage of time seem slower due to the large amount of sensory information you take in, according to studies. Travelling to new places, therefore, is a great way to add time and value to your year.

Try a new sport

This year, why not start practising a new sport to help you get fit? It could be an extreme sport, like abseiling, mountain biking or diving; or something simple like tennis or swimming. Exercising on a regular basis will boost your self-confidence and improve your health.

Fill your space with plants

Go green this year and fill your home and/or office with indoor pot plants. The presence of indoor plants can lower stress levels, research shows. Moreover, the air quality will also be improved. And when people work near plants, they report greater concentration and satisfaction.
